Women’s Equality Day, celebrated on August 26th each year, marks an important milestone in the fight for gender equality. Back in 1971, Representative Bella Abzug worked hard to make August 26th a special day for women. She got it recognized as “Women’s Equality Day.” Her bill said that this day would celebrate the moment when women in America first gained the right to vote in 1920! (NCC Staff, 2022) How cool is that?

As we reflect on this historic moment, there’s no better way to celebrate than by embracing the achievements of women in all aspects of life. And that includes sports. Also, Women's Equality Day is a perfect reminder of the trailblazers who’ve paved the way for women in sports. So, why not honor their legacy by embracing your inner Girl Boss and showing up to your next game as the Queen of the Green?

The Legacy of Women in Golf

Over the years, women have continued to break barriers in the world of golf. They inspire younger generations to pick up their clubs and play with confidence. From pioneers like Babe Zaharias, to modern-day LPGA stars like Lexi Thompson and Nelly Korda, women in golf have proven that golf isn’t just a male-dominated sport.

In fact, the impact of women in golf extends far beyond the professional players. Women have been shaping the culture of golf through leadership roles, golf courses, coaching, and even growing the game at the grassroots level. It’s not just about the players you see on TV. It’s about every woman of golf, every girl who steps onto the course with confidence, ready to take on the challenge.

Why Women’s Equality Day Matters in Golf

The journey towards gender equality in sports, including golf, has been a long one. Women have had to work harder, push further, and challenge traditional norms. This way, they carved out a space for themselves on the course.

Women’s Equality Day is a perfect opportunity to celebrate their resilience. Also, it is a way to acknowledge that girls and women everywhere continue to change the landscape of sports. Here’s why we should care about Women’s Equality Day in golf:

  • Breaking Barriers: The story of women in golf has been one of continuous progress. Female golfers have consistently shattered records and defied stereotypes, proving that women’s skills and talent are impressive. Their achievements have paved the way for future generations, showing that anything is possible when you believe in yourself and push beyond limits.
  • Inspiration to All: By celebrating Women’s Equality Day, we recognize that the journey of one is the journey of many. Women who golf, of all ages and styles, inspire others to believe in themselves. They inspire us all to keep fighting for equal opportunities.
  • Changing the Game: Female golfers are rewriting the rules of the game. The LPGA, founded in 1950 (LGPA, 2025), continues to grow the sport and ensure that women’s voices and performances are acknowledged. Thanks to this, they are celebrated on the world stage.

Women’s Equality Day: Your Time to Shine

Women’s Equality Day is a call to action. A reminder to own your space in every area of life, including the golf course. So, are you participating in a junior golf tournament? Are you just practicing your swing? It doesn't matter. This is the perfect day to reflect on the incredible strides women have made in golf and beyond.

  • Own Your Power: Every time you step on the course, remember that you are a part of a growing community of women who golf, making a lasting impact on the sport. Certainly, it’s not just about playing well. It’s about playing with confidence and empowering yourself to reach new heights.
  • Support Each Other: Competition is fun. However, Women’s equality is about community. Support the women in your life, whether they’re friends, coaches, or fellow players. Together, we can build confidence and continue to uplift each other and change the game.
  • Confidence is Key: Remember, every swing, putt, and shot you make is an opportunity to show up as the Girl Boss you are. Also, confidence is contagious. When you radiate it, others will feel it too. Remember: feeling comfortable in your golf outfit is an essential part of this process.
